Best practise for keeping an Activity in memory

MartHughMartHugh USMember ✭✭✭

I have an App with two main activities. One is the launcher activity, and periodically polls a server for data and presents some information.

If the user selects some information from the activity display another activity is started.

This obviously pauses and stops the first activity.

However I need the original activity to continue to run in the background and poll the server and issue notifications and other housekeeping.

1) Is there any reason why an Activity which has entered the Stop state should not be able to do this, and
2) Is there any way I can prevent the background Activity from being destroyed ?

Thanks.
