"Unknown MSBuild failure" when trying to run tests on Mac

curiousXamarinUsercuriousXamarinUser USMember ✭✭

I'm getting a "Unknown MSBuild failure. Please try building the project again" error when I try to run tests on Test Cloud using Xamarin Studio Community for Mac (i.e by right-clicking the tests and selecting "Run in test Cloud").

When I do the same in Xamarin for Visual Studio on Windows, everything works fine.

Anyone knows the solution?

Can you send the full version information from Xamarin Studio for Windows and Xamarin Studio for Mac so we can check for any interesting differences between your setup that works vs. fails?

Help > About > Show Details > Copy Information (Xamarin Studio Windows)

I'm not OP, but I'm experiencing the same issue (except that I haven't checked if it works on Windows). Visual Studio for Mac refuses to deploy to Test Cloud.

    1. Do you notice if the behavior goes away (even if only temporarily) if you restart Visual Studio for Mac?
(Or Xamarin Studio for the original poster/other users who are seeing similar behavior there).

    2. Can you send over the IDE log folder from the affected IDE?

      • Xamarin Studio: Help > Open Log Directory
      • Visual Studio for Mac: ~/Library/Logs/VisualStudio
  • Hi,

This bug also occurs on my machine. I use latest release of Xamarin Studio and macOS, XCode, etc. Please find IDE logs here:

@BartlomiejPater Thanks for sending those logs. I've found a possibly related bug report and checked with our Xamarin Studio engineers for their thoughts on the issue, however, it looks like the logs you shared did not capture the error; the logging should show the message "Unknown MSBuild Failure" somewhere.

    1. Did you send over your entire log folder after reproducing the issue?
    2. Can you (or others reading this thread who may be seeing the problem) zip up the entire log folder after encountering the error again?
    3. Do you still reproduce the issue after restarting Xamarin Studio?

    Hi,
I have the same problem, with Xamarin Studio fully patched to the stable channel.

    Hi all,

I ran some more tests and I think I've figured out how to reproduce the bug now. It seems like it's only affecting iOS apps built as part of a Xamarin.Forms PCL project. iOS apps using shared projects, or those not using Forms at all did not reproduce the issue on my end.

Based on this I've filed the following bug report: https://bugzilla.xamarin.com/show_bug.cgi?id=55751

I have the same bug when I try to run tests on physical device, using Xamarin Studio. I have Xamarin.iOS project with referenced two projects: another Xamarin.iOS and shared project. The "Unknown MSBuild failure" pops up when it tries to build referenced Xamarin.iOS project.
