Video Conferencing with Xamarin

Hi,
We are planning to make a app that has Video Conferencing facility.
We are planning to use Xamarin, so we can have cross platform app.

The Video Conferencing can be done from,
Android phones / tab, iOS Phones / Tabs and Web Based.

We are doing our RnD over Video Conferencing SDKs available to make this
We got Vidyo, ooVoo, tokbox etc

But all have SDK in Native Android and Native iOS

Can anyone guide us,
Is there any SDK for Xamarin?

Or how to Modify the Native App (SDK Available) to work with xamarin, point is that, we dont want to call another app. it will affect the User Experience of the app, so we may need to develop our business logic over the existing SDK.

Best Regards
Santosh Pathak

  • If you haven't already, please read through the guides on how to use native Android and iOS libraries. Here: http://docs.xamarin.com/guides/android/advanced_topics/using_native_libraries and here: http://docs.xamarin.com/guides/ios/advanced_topics/binding_objective-c

The short answer is yes you can use any native iOS and Android SDKs with your Xamarin project, but no one here is going to hold your hand, the guides are very comprehensive.

Sorry to bump this old thread but how was your development of the Video Conference app?

Hey, i'd like to ask the same thing - some news with your video conference app?

    Greetings!

  • I don't know how Shanty' app is progressing, but we have made an app for Android (and moving to iOS now) which is using Tokbox. It works rather well and getting the native library to work wasn't too much of a hazzle.

Only problem right now is that some of you customers are looking into using windows phone instead, and Tokbox do not have a Windows Phone SDK. They don't have anything on the roadmap for the next 6 months.

    Hi,
Is video call possible using Xamarin Forms or Xamarin Native ?
Please let me know if you have found any solution to this.
    Thanks.

Yes, video call with Xamarin Native iOS using OpenTok (https://tokbox.com/) is possible, and as @HenrikLund.8404 said above it is also possible for Xamarin Native Android as well.
They even have Xamarin ready Nuget packages, so no need to create your own native library binding.

However, the video quality most of the time is bad (at least that's the experience we had).

  • Tokbox is software based (ie CPU dependent) and on slow phones the quality will fall below that of skype. But on good phones I believe quality is almost the same as skype (not better...)

Hi Henrik, can you please share to correctly integrate OpenTok with Xamarin Forms(Android, iOS)?
We followed this implementation https://github.com/c0de/XamarinOpenTok , but constantly getting white screen(no video stream is sent) on 1 of the 2 devices when video call is started on Android. We couldn't get it running on iOS 10 due to app crash.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Hi Dragan,

I am also trying to develop a similar app. Could you please tell me whether I can use OpenTok to make a video call between a mobile app(android/ios) and a .net web application?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

All you guys looking for a video conferencing SDK can refer to CometChat's SDK
    https://github.com/CometChat/xamarin-chat-sdk-android-demo

It comes with a ready-to-use UI that is 100% customisable. Apart from the basic text, video & voice call options, it does support video conferencing.

You can try Mirrorfly's Video Calling SDK. They help you to implement the video conferencing facility with 100% customization possibility.
