How to use icons instead of text in an ActionBar menu?

I had a functioning ActionBar menu with two items, showing the icons. However in order to use a splash screen I had to use the "Theme.AppCompat.Light" theme. After that the Action Bar menu disappeared, and instead of it I get that classic icon with three dots, and when I press it then I get my menu, but only with text, no icons. I can't go back to the default theme because I need the splash screen, but I also need to display the icons in the Action Bar, how can I accomplish this?

Look for the menu.xml file in your project. rach menu item there has designation if it should be shown Always or Never.
