Xamarin Update on VS 2013 says I need the Build Tools for VS 2015

When I try to install the Xamarin Update, it says that "This Setup requires Microsoft Build Tools 2015". That is only applicable to VS 2015. I am running VS 2013. Do I just miss out on this update?

    Update for June 2017

These tools can be downloaded from the Download tab of My.VisualStudio.com with a Visual Studio subscription or a Dev Essentials account.

    Old information from June 2016

See https://releases.xamarin.com/stable-release-cycle-7/: "The Cycle 7 version of Xamarin.VS requires Microsoft Build Tools 2015 (or Visual Studio 2015) to be installed".

Or the release notes under "Only if Visual Studio 2015 is not installed ..."

Both of those documents provide links to the Microsoft Build Tools 2015 installer package.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Brendan,

I still can't install the xamarin update even after I installed Microsoft Build Tools 2015 (as per the provided link).

What I did is, at VS 2013->Tools->Xamarin->Other and Check Now (Stable)
Xamarin 4.1.1.3 and clicked install. Then later I got this popup: "This setup requires Microsoft Build Tools package to be installed for this installation to continue." Then the Xamarin setup wizard will exit immediately.

    Current setup is:
    Windows 7
Visual Studio 2013 Update 5 with:
    Xamarin 4.0.3.214
    Xamarin.Android 6.0.3.5
    Xamarin.iOS 9.6.1.8

I am also having the same issue. I have Visual Studio 2015 installed on my system, but am unable to update Xamarin. Attempting to manually install Microsoft Build Tools 2015 has no effect, and the error is still displayed when attempting to update Xamarin.

    My system:
Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2015 with Update 3
    Windows 10 Anniversary (14393) Enterprise

It worked for me when I started the installation while running Visual Studio 2015 as administrator.

Install these is the fix. You can get to them through BrendanZagaeski's link but this will make it simpler.

I had this problem, I installed build tools using the links, then ran Visual Studio as an administrator. Xamarin would update then..

Same problem. Downloaded the .Net framework installer, installed MS Build Tools 2013 and now it's requiring the install of MS Build Tools 2015. The main problem is located the download. The provided links for the 2015 Build Tools no longer work. Are there any alternatives?

As an update, I found a working link for the MSBuild Tools 2015, it was hard to find.

Both 2013 and 2015 Build Tools were previously installed. Even though I am an admin on my Windows 10 machine, I had to select, "Run as Admin" on VS2015 for the Xamarin update to run.
