Extending GLCameraRipple to capture images

I've been working on this for over a week without much progress. I am trying to take the following common example https://github.com/xamarin/monotouch-samples/tree/master/GLCameraRipple and extend it to capture the camera's view from a button press.

Assuming I have a button rendered on screen that successfully calls Capture() inside the RippleViewController. How should I best proceed? My goal is to arrive at a UIImage which I can then save out to disk.
