I have been searching the net for 5 hours tring to find a way to replace the default "X" button that comes with the MasterDetail page but have gotten nowhere.

I have found some suggestions to "just add an image to the root directory", that all well and good but what do I name it, I have tried "menu" "default", "detail" I cant think else what I should name it.

So below is the button, I just want to change the "X" to a menu icon

    Its actually really simple. When you are creating your MasterDetail page add in the icon value

    var masterDetailPage = new MasterDetailPage();
    masterDetailPage.Master = new Menu() { Title = "Settings", Icon = "settings.png" };
    masterDetailPage.Detail = myNavPage;

    The Master page has an Icon property, just set that to an image.
