"Connection to the layout renderer failed" after today's update

Today, after a Xamarin update got installed, I cannot get into any of my layout files. I’ve seen posts on this before, but they were from a while ago, and I even saw that a bug was fixed. Whenever I try to access an axml, I get:

Connection to the layout renderer failed. This may be caused by a misconfiguration of Java. Please close and open the file again.

Everything worked great before this update. Any way around this? Thanks

I noticed this in the updater.log file:

Info 1903.Scheduling reboot operation: Deleting file C:\Program Files (x86)\Xamarin Studio\AddIns\MonoDevelop.MonoDroid\java\AndroidDesigner.jar. Must reboot to complete operation.
DEBUG: Error 2911: Could not remove the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Xamarin Studio\bin.
The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2911. The arguments are: C:\Program Files (x86)\Xamarin Studio\bin\, ,
Action ended 6:29:29: InstallFinalize. Return value 1.
Action ended 6:29:29: INSTALL. Return value 1.

So I had an AndroidDesigner.jar file from a starter edition that I had first installed. I took that file and put it in the proper place, and now things are working again. This seems a little scary, but at least I'm not dead in the water anymore.

Do you have the latest version of the Android SDK? If not, please try starting the SDK manager and updating to the latest version.

  • I updated to the latest version of the Android SDK. Still have this error

Connection to the layout renderer failed. This may be caused by a misconfiguration of Java. Please close and open the file again.

Same problem here trying to open the layout renderer in Xamarin Studio. Happened right after I installed the latest update. My Android SDK is up to date, Java too. I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm in evaluation process for my company and I'm presenting it to a developpers community next tuesday. This reccuring bug doesn't help me to sell the product.

  • You can revert back to 4.0.12 while waiting for Xamarin team fixing this issue

Not exactly sure how that is supposed to work. If I just install that I get all kinds of errors opening it up. Running the Xamarin Installer afterward just ends up updating Xamarin Studio to 4.0.13.

    Hi Guys

I am facing the same issue of "Connection to layout renderer failed." I am using Visual Studio 2010 and Windows 7 Ultimate. Kindly give the exact fix as I replaced androiddesigner.jar file in visual studio directory but nothing happened but the things got worst and now i was not able to open .axml file and Visual studio was crashing.

For users seeing this error message recently, note that this thread is quite old. In general it's recommended to report issues on newer threads rather than re-using old threads. The exception to that recommendation is if the issue has been on-going since the initial report of the problem. (Admittedly, the Xamarin forums search does not currently make it easy to find the most recent thread for a problem. I'll file an internal issue to see about improving that.)

The recent occurrence of this error message has its own (more recent forum thread) here:
    http://forums.xamarin.com/discussion/30818/connection-to-the-layout-renderer-failed-after-updating-to-5-7

I will close this thread for now to help consolidate further discussion of the recent problem onto that newer thread. Thanks!
