USB Passthrough from Emulator

I work with USB. I need the emulator to talk to my device via USB so I can debug. How can I enable passthrough? I'm working on Windows. I am using the out of the box AVD emulator that comes with Android Studio / Visual Studio. I suspect that this is a wrapper for qemu. Is that correct? I can install 3rd party emulators but I need some instructions on how to get these working with VS debugging.

One answer on this Stack Overflow thread suggests that qemu can do this if I create the emulator at the command line, but I don't know how to do this.

Has anyone got experience with this?
