iOS Simulator: Stuck on "Waiting for device"

BuildCalcBuildCalc USMember ✭✭✭

Steps to reproduce:

  • start new session for iOS Simulator app by selecting **Run / Start Profiling ** menu item in Visual Studio Mac
  • Select Time Profiler* and [Next] in **Available Instruments dialog
  • Keep defaults (Max Frames: 8; Sample Cycle Frequency: Maximum; Sampling Mode: CPU) and select [Start Profiling] in Common Options dialog

Observed behavior:

  • After the above steps, I observer the status bar (top center) displays "Starting application: ... " for less than 10 seconds
  • I verify that the app is running in the simulator and is responsive.
  • Then the status bar displays "Waiting for device: v2: runtime=co.." for 30 seconds (see waiting.png attachment)
  • Then a dialog appears that states: "An error has occurred Timeout exceeded when waiting for output file /var/folders/hk/n30z7jyx2dv0pd04hlmlrnbh0000gq/T/53vwcqce.mlpd" (see timeout.png attachment)

Expected behavior:

  • Everything as above except that Xamarin Profiler does not time out but rather starts a profile session

Looks like the app being profiled doesn't include the runtime profiler, which shouldn't happen, as 'Start Profiling' command in VSfM enables instrumentation and rebuilds the app if needed. So, hard to know, without seeing the simulator logs, so can you retry and get them (they should be available from the sim menu, IIRC, or if not, in the Console app).
